A Brief History of Donuts
Original Dutch "olykoeks"

Did you know that donuts have been with us for over 200 years?

Their exact history is disputed, but the main theory of the evolution of the donut believes they were introduced into North America by Dutch settlers. In the mid 19th century these early donuts were called olykoeks (translated as “oily cakes”). We have a lot to thank our Dutch ancestors for – they were also responsible for giving us apple pie, cookies, cobbler, and cream pies!

But the donut might have been made much earlier though, archaeologists have found evidence that a type of donut was enjoyed by the Native Americans in the South West as far back as prehistoric times!

The ring-shaped donut we recognize today is claimed to have been invented by Hansen Gregory, who worked on an American ship that traded limes when he was only sixteen years old. During his voyages on the high seas, he began to punch the holes in the center of the donut using a tin pepper pot, and he later taught his mother the trick.

The donut is a part of our American heritage, a tradition that Davis Donut House is proud to continue.
